Digital Independence Day meets Sourdough #7!

Gestern, Sonntag, war der Juli Digital Independence Day – dieses Monat machen wir eine Ausnahme und verbinden zwei Veranstaltungsrheien.

Das Netzwerk sozial machen: Community-Bildung und Vernetzung im Fediverse und anderen vielfältigen Kommunikationskanälen (mit Time’s Up)

Wann: Mittwoch, 8. Juli, 17:00–19:00

In Zeiten von Tech-Oligarchien und dem Autoritarismus der großen Technologieunternehmen haben viele von uns zentrale soziale Netzwerke und das, wofür sie stehen, satt. Wir wissen, dass diese Plattformen oft toxische Umgebungen sind: Sie verschlingen unsere Daten und unsere Aufmerksamkeit, setzen uns unter Druck – und dennoch fällt es schwer, sich von Instagram, Facebook, Twitter und Co. zu lösen. Gerade für Künstler:innen und Kulturproduzent:innen hängt ein großer Teil ihrer Arbeit davon ab, andere Menschen zu erreichen, ihre Projekte und Ideen zu kommunizieren und vielleicht sogar neue Perspektiven auf die komplexen Zustände unserer Gegenwart zu eröffnen. Wie können wir unsere Reichweite neu denken und Wege finden, mit unseren Communities in Kontakt zu bleiben?

Time’s Up ist ein Kollektiv, das seit vielen Jahren künstlerische Forschung mit sorgfältig reflektierten Kommunikationsformen verbindet – darunter eine Zeitung aus der Zukunft, eine Blogreihe aus dem Labor oder saisonale Postkartenserien mit Boots-Motiven. Im Gespräch mit servus.at wird Time’s Up seine Kommunikations- und Social-Media-Strategien vorstellen und reflektieren. Gemeinsam werden wir untersuchen, in welchen Bereichen nicht-kommerzielle und nicht-extraktive Kommunikationskanäle Räume für echten Austausch zwischen Menschen schaffen können.

Wir sprechen darüber, wie sich Social-Media-Strategien im Fediverse neu aufbauen lassen, geben aber auch bewusst Raum für etwas weniger „soziale“ Medien wie Newsletter, Mailinglisten und Signal-Gruppen – ebenso wie für Postkarten, Zines und andere bewusst entschleunigte Werkzeuge des Austauschs. https://timesup.org/talk26/sourdough

Digital Independence Day meets Sourdough #7!

Yesterday, Sunday, was the Digital Independence Day for July – this month we do something different and invite you on Wednesday, when we combine DID with our Sourdough series!

Making the Network Social: on reaching out and community making through the fediverse and other diverse-feeds (with our friends from Time’s Up)

When: Wednesday, 8 July, 2026 - 17:00 to 19:00
Where: servus Clubraum, c/o stwst, Kirchengasse 4, 4040 Linz

In times of techno oligarchy and big tech autoritarianism, we all hate centralized social networks and what they stand for. We all know those are toxic environments, they eat up our data and lives, make us stress, and yet it feels really difficult to disengage from Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and co. As artists and cultural producers, so much of our practice is dependent on reaching out others, communicating our work and ideas, and perhaps help us rethinking the mess in which we are living it. How to change our social media reach and rethink the way that allows us to reach out our community?

Time’s Up is a collective that since several years combines artistic reasearch with carefully reflected communication channels – among the many a newspaper from the future, a laboratory blog-series or seasonal postcard series with boats images. In a conversation with servus.at, Time’s up will unpack and reflect their social media strategies, isolating the areas in which non-commercial and non-extractive communication channels can become a space for real exchange between people.

We will talk about re-building social media strategies on the fediverse, but also give space to a-bit-less-social media such as newsletters, mailinglists, signal groups, but also postcards, zines and other intentionally slow conversation tools. https://timesup.org/talk26/sourdough

Sourdough #6: Drafting Hope, Creating Counter-Narratives
mit migrazine und maiz

Bei diesem Treffen präsentieren wir die letzte Ausgabe des Online-Magazins migrazine „Hoffnung entwerfen, Gegenerzählungen schaffen“, an der wir beteiligt waren, auf der Suche nach Lebensmodellen, Gemeinschaftsformen und Werten, die sowohl die Emanzipation von Technologiemonopolen als auch unsere Fähigkeit zu politischem digitalem Engagement fördern. Das Eingreifen mit Gegenerzählungen, die Entwicklung alternativer Nutzungen und Räume für Technologien sowie der Aufbau von Beziehungen, die Empathie und Großzügigkeit fördern, waren einige der Formen des (Re-)Existierens in einem hyper-digitalisierten Leben, die wir zur Bearbeitung dieses Themas zusammengetragen haben.

Gemeinsam mit den Autorinnen Aimilia Liountou und Mary Maggic werden wir zwei der veröffentlichten Texte besprechen: zum einen die soziopolitische Entwicklung von Emojis im globalen kulturellen Raum und zum anderen „Workshopology“ als Praxis und Forschungsmethodologie für Künstler*innen und interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit.

Wir laden Aktivistinnen, Autorinnen, Künstlerinnen, Redakteurinnen und die interessierte Öffentlichkeit zu einem Abend voller spielerischem und kreativem Austausch über hegemoniale digitale Infrastrukturen und mögliche Wege zu ihrer Überwindung ein – unter Anerkennung der damit verbundenen Widersprüche.

Wir freuen uns, erste Einblicke in „AMRO26 – Art Meets Radical Openness” zu geben. Das Programm ist jetzt online verfügbar: https://radical-openness.org/!

Seit 2008 bringt AMRO Künstler:innen, Aktivist:innen, Entwickler:innen und Forscher:innen zusammen, die sich mit offenen Kulturen und kollektiven Praktiken beschäftigen. Die Ausgabe 2026 setzt diesen Austausch im Rahmen eines viertägigen Programms mit Vorträgen, Workshops, Performances und Ausstellungen fort.

#AMRO26: Becoming Unreadable

Unter dem Titel „Becoming Unreadable“ untersucht und kritisiert die 2026 Ausgabe des AMRO-Festivals die digitalen Bedingungen, unter denen wir leben und arbeiten. Es hinterfragt die Vorstellung, dass eine ständige Online-Omnipräsenz normal und wünschenswert ist, und verfolgt diese unkritischen Annahmen bis in den Bereich der Open-Source-Software zurück. Diese Vernetzung bildet die Grundlage der Mainstream-Digitalkulturen. Sie dient zugleich als Werkzeug für allgegenwärtige Überwachung sowie die ausbeuterische Aneignung von Werken und Daten durch Big Tech, was kritischen Widerstand erforderlich macht.

Alternative Zugänge zu digitalen Technologien –nicht kommerzielle, ethische, nachhaltige und gemeinschaftsfördernde –werden im Rahmen des Festivalprogramms vorgestellt und untersucht.

Sourdough #6: Drafting Hope, Creating Counter-Narratives
with migrazine und maiz

In this gathering we present the last issue of the online-magazine migrazine "Drafting Hope, Creating Counter-Narratives” in which we took part in search for models of life, community and values that promote the emancipation from technology monopolies as well as our capacity for a political digital engagement. Intervening with counter-narratives, creating alternative uses and spaces for technologies, as well as building relationships that inspire empathy and generosity were some of the forms of (re)existence in a hyper-digitalized life that we gathered to tackle this issue.

Together with the authors Aimilia Liountou and Mary Maggic we will go through two of the published texts: respectively, the sociopolitical development of emojis in the global cultural sphere, and “Workshopology” as practice and research methodology for artists and interdisciplinary collaborations.

We invite activists, authors, artists, editors and general public to an evening full of playful, creative exchange on hegemonic digital infrastructure and possible ways to overcome them - acknowledging our contradictions at hand.

Since 2008, AMRO brings together artists, activists, developers, and researchers working with open cultures and collective practices. The 2026 edition continues this exchange across a four-day programme of talks, workshops, performances, and exhibitions.

#AMRO26: „Becoming Unreadable“

Under the title "Becoming Unreadable", the 2026 edition of the AMRO Festival examines and critiques the digital conditions under which we live and work. It questions the notion that constant online omnipresence is normal and desirable, and traces these uncritical assumptions back into the realm of open-source software. This interconnectedness forms the basis of mainstream digital cultures and serves as a tool for pervasive surveillance and the exploitative appropriation of works and data by Big Tech, which demands critical resistance.

Alternative approaches to digital technologies such as non-commercial, ethical, more sustainable and community-building, will be presented and evaluated within the festival programme.

servus.at - kunst & kultur im netz is happy to share first insights into AMRO26 – Art Meets Radical Openness, taking place from May 13th to 16th 2026 in Linz (with a pre-opening on May 12th).

Since 2008, AMRO brings together artists, activists, developers, and researchers working with open cultures and collective practices. The 2026 edition continues this exchange across a four-day programme of talks, workshops, performances, and exhibitions.

#AMRO26’s theme is “Becoming Unreadable”.
The festival reflects on growing demands for visibility in digital systems and explores artistic and technological strategies that resist surveillance, data extraction, and control. It asks how unreadability, opacity, and withdrawal can become tools for autonomy and self-determination.

Their Machines, their Rules? - Legality, Rights and Accountability in Algorithmic Society // with Kristina Tica, Raphael Albert & Joaquín Santuber

This third appointment in the series of the AI Cafés looks at algorithms, machine learning and AI and their impact on personal data, as well as the responsibility over automatic decision making processes. The participants will address AI Act and Digital Omnibus, current attempts of european institutions to regulate the industry around AI and yet leave enough room for economic activity.

Raphael Albert will discuss how generative models interfere with our fundamental right to digital privacy and whether the current legal framework on data protection provides sufficient protection against such interference.

Kristina Tica and Joaquín Santuber will provide insights into understanding the concept of Human Oversight, as introduced in Article 14 of the EU AI Act. The critique of this act focuses on the ambiguity and limitations of human decision-making and agency in overseeing, controlling, and intervening in high-risk AI systems, which can affect fundamental rights. Her approach comes from media arts, where along Joaquín Santuber, they developed an interactive artwork HUMAN OVERS[A]IGHT: THE OPS ROOM.

Kristina Tica is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher, with most recent practice centred on the artistic and theoretical exploration of the aesthetics and ethics of machine learning applications in visual computational processes. Currently pursuing her practical and theoretical PhD research at the intersection of critical AI, computational image and its aesth-ethics, media theory and law, between the Department of Media Theory at the University of Applied Arts (die Angewandte) Vienna and the Metaverse Lab [LIFT_C] at the Johannes Kepler University Linz. https://ticakristina.com/ https://www.instagram.com/ticakristina

Raphael Albert is a digital privacy professional, advocate, and activist based in Linz, Austria. Coming from a background in law and economics, he began working on privacy-related issues in 2018. Since then, he has worked in different settings and filled different roles. Of his many roles, he had always liked those the most which allowed him to share what he has learned about protecting our digital privacy with others. To focus on sharing knowledge and outreach, he started PRIVACY MINDED in 2023.

Joaquín Santuber is a lawyer and obtained his PhD in Design and IT-Systems from the Hasso-Plattner-Institute, Potsdam, Germany on the topic of designing for digital justice. As a research group lead of Metaverse Lab at the LIFT_C, JKU Linz, he works with art-based and design approaches to legality in digital environments, as well as critical approaches to public and judicial innovation.

About AI Café series

The AI Café is part of the cooperation project “Critical digitization for art and culture / Theater Phoenix x servus.at”, in which database-supported, automated, and algorithmic processes in theater operations are being explored. The project combines a critical examination of AI systems with their actual application in daily workflows. Part of the project, “KI Café” – a public event series in which different experiences and approaches to AI in cultural production are collected and discussed.

servus.at is founder and cooperation partner of LINZ FMR, the festival for art in digital contexts and public spaces. The next edition FMR 26 brings an exhibition to locations including the Schlosspark, the Schlossmuseum, the Friedrichstor, the Rudolfstor, the Schlossbergstollen, the Rosengarten, the Keplerwiese and the Martinskirche. Works by numerous national and international artists from the fields of media art, digital art and internet art will be on display.

The programme also features lectures and talks on topics such as “Digital Afterlife and Immortality“, “Future Archaeology and Digital Artifacts“, “Digital Deceleration, Isolation, and the New Idyll“ and “AI Societies, Power Structures, and Resistance“. The Opening Night on Wednesday, 3 June and the Concert Night on Friday, 5 June will feature live acts and DJ sets from the world of experimental electronic music. Daily performances by participating artists on the festival grounds, as well as guided tours with art educators and curators, complete the programme.

Wie funktioniert Vermittlungsarbeit, die zum Fragenstellen anregt, partizipativ und prozessorientiert ist? Und warum ist das wichtig? Wir lernen Bausteine und Methoden für das Arbeiten an Schnittstellen von Vermittlung, Partizipation und Kunst kennen und gestalten den Workshop ausgehend von Fragen, die sich bei dir auftun. Diese Fragestellungen entwickeln wir gemeinsam weiter – und wer möchte, kann sie später auf Postkarten ausstellen. Außerdem gestalten wir gemeinsam einen kurzen Rundgang im öffentlichen Raum.

Tamara Imlinger arbeitet als Autorin, Musikerin, Historikerin und Vermittlerin an Schnittstellen von Kunst, Kulturarbeit, Wissenschaft und Partizipation – z.B. im Kollektiv Salon Limusin, für den Lern- und Gedenkort Schloss Hartheim, den Verein Geschichte(n) für alle und in der Redaktion der KUPFzeitung. 2026 setzt sie mit Salon Limusin das partizipative Live-Hörspiel “Unser Feld” für das Festival communale 2026 des Landes Oberösterreich um. Für die Kulturhauptstadt Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 co-leitete sie ein partizipatives Projekt zum Sprechen über den Nationalsozialismus.

How does cultural mediation work and how can we encourage questioning, be participatory and process-oriented? And why is it important? We will learn about methods for working at the intersections of mediation, participation and art, and we will design the workshop based on questions that arise for you. We will develop these questions together – and anyone who wants to can later display them on postcards. We will also design a short tour in public space together.

Tamara Imlinger works as an author, musician, historian and mediator at the intersections of art, cultural work, science and participation – e.g. in the Salon Limusin collective, for the Schloss Hartheim learning and memorial site, the Geschichte(n) für alle association and on the editorial board of the KUPF newspaper. In 2026, she realizes the participatory project “Unser Feld” (Our Field) for the Festival communale 2026 (Land OÖ). For the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024, she co-led a participatory project on talking about National Socialism.

Ausgehend von dem vom Verein F.I.S.T. 2025 konzipierten Stadtspaziergang STOLPERN (https://fist.servus.at/projekte/stolpern/) wird in diesem Workshop zur gemeinsamen kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Stadtgeschichte von Linz eingeladen.

STOLPERN und der dazugehörige Stadtspaziergang kontextualisierten Denkmäler und Orte in Linz neu, klärten über NS Bezüge auf, verwiesen auf antisemitische, rassistische und/oder völkischen Inhalte und zeigten patriarchale Inhalte auf, die sich über die Zeit in der Stadt in Stein formiert haben. Bestehende Denkmäler, die von einer faschistischen und patriarchalen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart erzählen, standen jenen Denkmälern gegenüber, die es noch nicht gibt und deren Grundzüge durch performative Skizzen gezogen wurden.

F.I.S.T. lädt ein in diesem Workshop gemeinsam über Orte, Erinnerungskultur und Strukturen der Stadt Linz zu stolpern und über einstürzende Narrative und spekulative Neubesetzungen zu diskutieren. Ausgehend von individuellen Perspektiven auf die Stadt, imaginieren wir Entwürfe für neue Denkmäler, sprechen über Recherchearbeit und versuchen Strategien des Stürzens zu.

F.I.S.T. ist ein Verein aus Linz, der einem intersektionalen queer-feministischen Verständnis folgt und sich dabei als kapitalismuskritisch und antifaschistisch begreift. Seit 2023 organisiert F.I.S.T. Veranstaltungen im Bereich gesellschaftspolitischer Bildung mit einer Zielsetzung, den gesellschaftlichen Diskurs und Austausch für queerfeministische Themen zu fördern und die gesellschaftliche Transformation hin zu einer gleichberechtigten Gesellschaft voranzutreiben.

→ AMRO Research Lab // Anna Krahers Ausstellung @Screensaver Gallery

Das Community-Mitglied Anna Kraher stellt derzeit ihre Arbeit „ROAD TO FUTURES PAST” in der ScreenSaverGallery aus.

Die im Rahmen des 2025 Research Lab-Programms fertiggestellte Arbeit untersucht (rechengestützte) Vorhersagen als Machtinstrument, das auf zwei Ebenen wirkt: Einerseits werden Mythen, Versprechungen und Vorstellungen von Vorhersagen beleuchtet, andererseits die technologischen Werkzeuge, die solche Vorhersagen ermöglichen. „Road to Futures Past” zeigt, wie sowohl imaginierte Zukünfte als auch konstruierte Vergangenheiten die Gegenwart als primären Ort der Machtausübung verschleiern. Indem das Werk die in Vorhersagetechnologien eingebetteten zeitlichen Mythen aufdeckt, zeigt es, wie die "Informatics of Domination" (Haraway) funktioniert, und betont die Gegenwart als umkämpften politischen Raum.

Die Ausstellung ist eine Kooperation zwischen servus.at und der ScreenSaverGallery. Die ScreenSaverGallery ist ein Open-Source-Softwareprojekt, das inaktive PCs in eine von Künstlern betriebene Online-Galerie verwandelt. In dieser werden unter anderem neue Medien, digitale, vernetzte, netz- und computerbasierte Medienkunst mit regelmäßig kuratierten Ausstellungen präsentiert.

Diese Ausstellung ist Teil der laufenden Reihe der ScreenSaverGallery zum Thema “Informatic of Domination” (Informatik der Herrschaft). Anlässlich des 40-jährigen Jubiläums von Donna Haraways „Cyborg Manifesto” wird ihr Vermächtnis durch speziell als Bildschirmschoner gestaltete Kunstwerke neu gedacht – und damit eine allgegenwärtige digitale Form für feministische und posthumane Reflexion zurückerobert.

→ Sourdough #4 Stumbling and Falling! Questioning City Narratives

Based on the city walk STOLPERN conceived by the association F.I.S.T. in 2025 (https://fist.servus.at/projekte/stolpern/), this workshop invites participants to engage in a joint critical reflection on the urban history of Linz.

The STOLPERN project and its associated city walk recontextualized monuments and locations in Linz, clarified their Nazi-era connections, pointed out antisemitic, racist, and/or ethnic-nationalist content, and highlighted patriarchal content that has solidified in the city over time. Existing monuments, which tell stories of a fascist and patriarchal past and present, were contrasted with monuments that do not yet exist, whose outlines were sketched through performative exercises.

F.I.S.T. invites participants in this workshop to stumble together over places, memory culture, and the structures of the city of Linz, and to discuss collapsing narratives and speculative reappropriations. Starting from individual perspectives on the city, we will imagine designs for new monuments, talk about research work, and explore strategies of falling.

F.I.S.T. is an association from Linz that follows an intersectional queer-feminist understanding and positions itself as anti-capitalist and anti-fascist. Since 2023, F.I.S.T. has been designing and organizing events in the field of socio-political education, aiming to promote social discourse and exchange on queer-feminist topics and to advance societal transformation toward an equitable society.

→ AMRO Research Lab // Anna Kraher exhibiting @Screensaver Gallery

Servus community member Anna Kraher is currently exhibiting her work “ROAD TO FUTURES PAST” on the ScreenSaverGallery.

The work, that Anna finalized within the 2025 Research Lab program, examines prediction as an instrument of power, operating on these two levels: the myths, promises and imaginaries of prediction, and the technological tools for prediction. ROAD TO FUTURES PAST reveals how both imagined futures and constructed pasts obscure the present as the primary site where power is exercised. By exposing the temporal myths embedded in predictive technologies, the work reveals how informatics of domination operate, and insists on the present as a contested political space.

The show is online as a cooperation between servus and the ScreenSaverGallery. The ScreenSaverGallery is an open source software project that transforms an inactive personal computing device into an artist-run online gallery showcasing new media, digital, networked, net- and computational media based art, among others, with regularly curated exhibitions.

This exhibition is part of ScreenSaverGallery’s ongoing series exploring the theme ‘Informatics of Domination‘. Marking 40 years since Donna Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto, it rethinks her legacy through artworks designed specifically as screensavers—reclaiming a ubiquitous digital form for feminist and posthuman reflection.

Art Meets Radical Openness 2026
Becoming unreadable

servus.at is calling for contributions to the upcoming edition of AMRO26 “Becoming unreadable”.

Art Meets Radical Openness (AMRO) is a biennial community festival for art, hacktivism and open cultures. The festival offers a context for discussing the challenges of digital cultures, software and network infrastructures, art and everyday life, education, politics and activism. The event examines contemporary techno-social politics and digital networked cultures through critical media art practices, self-developed digital tools, and participatory formats. The program gives spaces to workshops, performances, artworks, talks, lectures; other open and experimental formats can also be included.

AMRO has been organized since 2008 by servus.at in cooperation with the Linz University of Art, Department of Time-Based Media. The four-day event includes: a discursive program with keynotes, panels and lectures, workshops and showcases, exhibitions and a nightline.

Working Title: Becoming unreadable

For the current edition, titled “Becoming unreadable,” we explore ways of resisting the toxic dimensions of contemporary hypervisibility. By this, we refer to the current logic of platform-mediated social and political discourse, to the global-scale extraction and appropriation infrastructures feeding the AI and strengthening new and old colonial threads. We also refer to the current discourse in the F/LOSS communities that calls for a new understanding of collaboration and digital commons.

The upcoming issue of AMRO questions and criticises the digital conditions under which we live and work. It challenges the notion that a constant online omnipresence is normal and desirable, and traces these uncritical assumptions down to the sphere of Open Source software. This interconnectedness forms the basis of mainstream digital cultures and serves as a tool for ubiquitous surveillance and the exploitative appropriation of works and data by big tech, which demands critical opposition.

AMRO26 aims at challenging the common understanding of AI, networks and computers, and through its programme, explores approaches that offer real change: low-tech, feminist and community IT, computing within limits, up to even more radical ideas around de-computing, de-networking, de-scaling and de-platforming ourselves. 'Becoming Unreadable' involves evading surveillance by oligarchic tech corporations, operate under the radar, and refuse to comply to the total AI cloud. Non-commercial community infrastructures are fundamental tools in this process, but even more importantly we need to develop new ways of understanding each others and being together as humans. Art Meets Radical Openness wants to be a space dedicated to that.

Call for participation

We are looking for contributions for AMRO26!

Proposed projects should explore, address, react to current topics within critical media arts and community-oriented, artistic run infrastructural cultures. They should provide experimental, critical approaches of the uses of technology. They can be media art pieces, tech-prototypes, but also modalities and scenarios in which such technologies are implemented and used, or analyze issues within the current tech and media landscapes.

We welcome finished and unfinished works, participatory investigation formats, but also projects still in development that can be presented for feedback and new contributions.

• Lectures or Panel proposals (20 to 40 minutes)

• Workshops (1-3 hours, max ca 15 participants)

• Artwork presentations & project showcases (demos)

• Video works & short movies

• Performances (ca 30 min)

Wenn wir uns selbst als eine Art Technologie vorstellen, können wir Mz*Baltazar’s als eine Gruppe (Quelle) mit sowohl thematischen als auch physischen Orten betrachten (Orte mit mehr oder weniger Offenheit). Wie können wir verschiedene verfügbare Ressourcen erweitern, um unsere eigene Funktionalität zu untersuchen? Welche Arten von Signalen sind um uns herum präsent? Drei kurze Präsentationen in unterschiedlichen Formaten erkunden Signale, Klänge, (mögliche) Wechselseitigkeiten und Zukunftsfragen. Quantitative, qualitative und verkörperte Daten werden kritisch betrachtet und miteinander verflochten, um Zukunftsfragen über menschliche und nicht-menschliche Teilhabe zu stellen.

Franziska Thurner erforscht wie KI‑Bildgeneratoren arbeiten und inwiefern sie gesellschaftliche Vorurteile verstärken und reproduzieren. KI‑Trainingsdaten bestehen aus Milliarden von Internet‑Posts und spiegeln bestehende gesellschaftliche Diskriminierungen (Sexismus, Rassismus, Ableismus, Klassismus) wider. Im Zuge des KI-Cafes werden Prompts verfasst und Bildgeneratoren ausprobiert – die Ergebnisse werden im gemeinsamen Diskurs in Hinblick auf Gender, digitalen Kolonialismus sowie Ressourcen und Klimaschutz analysiert.

     Franziska Thurner ist Medienkünstlerin und Universitätslektorin an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien sowie an der Kunstuniversität Linz. Im Zuge ihrer langjährigen Lehrtätigkeit widmet sie sich der Erforschung und Erprobung aufkommender Technologien mit Fokus auf Kunst, Schule und Vermittlungsarbeit sowie Fragestellungen zu digitaler Ethik und digitaler Gerechtigkeit. Im Fokus ihrer künstlerischen Auseinandersetzungen stehen zudem zahlreiche Kollaborationen unter anderem mit dem Soundkünstler Abby Lee Tee und ihrem gemeinsamen Projekt „Beaver Lab” oder mit Hanna Priemetzhofer als „System Jaquelinde”.

     Das KI Café ist Teil des Kooperationsprojekts „Kritische Digitalisierung für Kunst und Kultur / Theater Phoenix x servus.at” und ist im Rahmen des Projekts KI im Theater Phönix durch das Förderprogramm - KI in der Kunst und Kultur realisiert. In diesem Projekt werden datenbankgestützte, automatisierte und algorithmische Prozesse im Theaterbetrieb erforscht. Das Projekt verbindet eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit KI-Systemen mit deren tatsächlicher Anwendung in täglichen Arbeitsabläufen. Die „KI Cafés” dienen als öffentliche Veranstaltungsreihe, in der unterschiedliche Erfahrungen und Ansätze zu KI in der Kulturproduktion gesammelt und diskutiert werden.

     Workshop mit der Schweigende Mehrheit, ein internationales, internationalistisches Künstler*innenkollektiv, das seit 2015 poltisch-kulturelle Intervention auf Bühnen, Leinwänden, im öffentlichen Raum und in Klassenzimmern produziert. Geleitet von Tina Leisch, Film-, Text- und Theaterarbeiterin.

In der letzter Generalversammlung wurde eine Vorstandserweiterung beschlossen: wir dürfen jetzt unsere neue Vorstandsmitglieder Christina Gruber, Joseph Knierzinger, und Simon Repp herzlich begrüßen!

     Christina Gruber ist bildende Künstlerin, Süßwasserökologin, Lektorin und ehemalige Störpflegerin. Sie beschäftigt sich mit den Übergangsbereichen zwischen Kunst und Wissenschaft sowie zwischen Wasser und Land. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Wien und Amstetten in Österreich.

     Joseph Knierzinger (joak) ist ein Künstler, der mit obsoleten Medien/Technologien/Müll und anachronistischen, fiktiven Zeitlinien arbeitet. Humor und Ironie sind eine wichtige Methode in seinen Unternehmungen. Derzeit arbeitet er in Linz an verschiedenen Alogismen und Algorithmen.

     Simon Repp ist interdisziplinärer Mediengestalter und Entwickler und arbeitet an Medien und Systemen mit einem Fokus auf Ethik, Einfachheit und Nachhaltigkeit. Bei servus fungiert er aktuell vor allem als Bindeglied zu den Libre Graphics und Permacomputing Communities sowie als direkter Draht in die Bundeshauptstadt - er lebt nämlich nicht in Linz, sondern in Wien.

Dieses beinhaltet eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit KI-Systemen im Theaterbereich sowie eine praktische Evaluierung digitaler, datenbankgestützter, automatisierter und algorithmischer Prozesse im Theaterbetrieb. Das Projekt ist in Arbeitsessions mit dem Phönix-Team und in praktischen Hands-on-Workshops mit Expert:innen strukturiert. Es gibt auch einen öffentlichen Teil: die KI-Cafés mit Inputs und Konversationen über nachhaltige Digitalisierung und KI-Kritik im Hinblick auf Kunst und Kultur.

Zu Gast beim ersten KI-Café ist der Forscher und Künstler Błażej Kotowski. Er ist Teil der Music Technology Group der Pompeu-Fabra-Universität in Barcelona und untersucht, wie KI-Architekturen kreative Prozesse vermitteln und neue Formen des klanglichen Ausdrucks ermöglichen. Sein Input „How to lose control and call it creativity“ fokussiert sich auf die Nutzung irreführender Begrifflichkeiten wie „Verantwortungsbewusstsein“, „Vertrauenswürdigkeit“ und „Kreativität“ in der KI-Industrie. Sie werden oft verwendet, um ausbeuterische Infrastrukturen zu beschönigen und zu legitimieren. Narrative von Kreativität und Ethik werden herangezogen, um technologische Systeme befähigend und menschenzentriert erscheinen zu lassen, während die zugrunde liegende gewinnorientierte Unternehmenslogik unverändert bleibt. Aus seiner Perspektive als Künstler und Forscher werden Beispiele aus dem Bereich der kreativen KI und der Wissenschaft vorgestellt, die es erlauben, Kreativität aus den KI-Narrativen zurückzugewinnen.

Ohne Zweifel leben wir in einer weltweiten digitalen Oligarchie. Eine Handvoll Männer verfügen über die Algorithmen und die Einnahmen weniger Social Media Plattformen, die weltweit täglich dominanter die Flüsse von Information kanalisieren. In Europa gibt es Regulierungen durch die EU um diese undemokratische digitale Machtkonzentration zumindest einem kleinen Teil der Regeln und Gesetze zu unterwerfen, die im analogen Raum Rechtsstaatlichkeit und Demokratie garantieren sollen. In vielen Teilen der Welt herrschen die “TechBros” ungebremst und unkontrolliert. Weil wir uns freiwillig für Google, Meta, Byte Dance und Amazon zu gläsernen Menschen gemacht haben, haben wir dazu beigetragen, diese digitalen Oligarchen aufzubauen.

Wir diskutieren die Tatsachen: Wie genau schauen diese Machtverhältnisse aus? Welche nationalen und internationalen Regulierungsmöglichkeiten gibt es derzeit? Was besagen Digital Service Act, Digital Market Act, AI-Act der EU? Welche Macht haben wir als Nutzer*innen? Welche alternative Kommunikationstools könnten wir nutzen, warum tun wir es kaum? Wie ist es wenigen digitalen Oligarchen gelungen, die Utopie des weltweiten freien Kommunikationsnetzes, in dem alle Menschen auf Augenhöhe und unzensiert miteinander kommunizieren können, in einen Brutkasten für Hass im Netz, Rassismus und antidemokratische Kräfte zu verkehren? Wie sähe eine utopische Struktur der digitalen Welt aus? Unsere Vorstellungen von “Autoritarismus”, “Totalitarismus”, “Faschismus” orientieren sich am Alptraum übermächtiger, allwissender staatlicher Herrschaft. Im digitalen Raum haben wir es aber mit übermächtigen, allwissenden privaten Firmen zu tun, die durch ihre Datenallmacht starken Einfluss auf öffentliche Meinungen und Wahlen und damit auf die Bildung ihnen willfähriger Regierungen nehmen können. In welcher Weise hat sich das Verhältnis von Staaten und Wirtschaft im digitalen Universum verändert? Mit welchen Begriffen beschreiben wir diesen Übergang ehemals hoheitlicher Machtbefugnisse in private Hände? Was tun?

Die d*sign week 2025 dreht sich um die Frage: „For who(m) is the making?“ – Wer ist am Designprozess beteiligt, als Gestalterin oder als Adressatin, und wie verbindet Design die Bedürfnisse und den Alltag beider? Die einwöchige Veranstaltung für experimentelle und unabhängige Designpraktiken untersucht, wie Zugang, Teilhabe und Inklusion zu zentralen Werten unabhängiger Designarbeit werden können. Das Festival wird von Potato Publishing und servus.at gemeinsam mit den Departments Visual Communication und Timebased Media der Universität für künstlerische Gestaltung Linz organisiert. Die Partner bringen umfassende Erfahrung in unabhängigen und experimentellen Projekten ein und schaffen so eine offene Plattform für Austausch, Lernen und kreative Kollaboration.

Durch Workshops, Vorträge und Gespräche eröffnet die dsign week Räume für Austausch zwischen Designerinnen, Künstlerinnen und Coderinnen. Das Programm richtet sich bewusst auch an ein breiteres Publikum – etwa durch Notizen, Übersetzungen und Kontextualisierung der Inhalte. Das Festival legt den Fokus auf Design als soziale Praxis: Wer profitiert vom Design? Wie kann es inklusiver gestaltet werden? Wie lassen sich ästhetische und künstlerische Intentionen mit Zugänglichkeit verbinden? Die d*sign week 2025 lädt dazu ein, Designpraktiken zu hinterfragen, neue Perspektiven zu entwickeln und Netzwerke der Solidarität aufzubauen.

Together with Theater Phönix, servus.at is currently carrying out the project “Critical Digitization for Art and Culture”. This involves a critical examination of AI systems in the theater sector as well as a practical evaluation of digital, database-supported, automated, and algorithmic processes in theater operations. The project is structured around working sessions with the Phönix team and practical hands-on workshops with experts. There is also a public component: the AI Cafés with inputs and conversations about sustainable digitization and AI criticism with regard to art and culture.

The guest at the first AI Café is researcher and artist Błażej Kotowski. He is part of the Music Technology Group at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona and investigates how AI architectures mediate creative processes and enable new forms of sonic expression. His input, “How to lose control and call it creativity,” focuses on the use of misleading terms such as “responsibility,” “trustworthiness,” and “creativity” in the AI industry. These terms are often used to gloss over and legitimize exploitative infrastructures. Narratives of creativity and ethics are used to make technological systems appear empowering and human-centered, while the underlying profit-oriented corporate logic remains unchanged. From his perspective as an artist and researcher, examples from the field of creative AI and science are presented that allow creativity to be reclaimed from AI narratives.

There is no doubt that we live in a global digital oligarchy. A handful of men control the algorithms and revenues of a few social media platforms that increasingly dominate and channel the global flow of information. In Europe, EU regulations attempt, at least to some extent, to subject this undemocratic concentration of digital power to the same rules and laws that are meant to guarantee democracy and the rule of law in the analog world. In many other parts of the world, the “TechBros” rule unchecked and unregulated. Because we have voluntarily made ourselves transparent to Google, Meta, ByteDance, and Amazon, we have helped to build these digital oligarchs.

We will discuss the facts: What exactly do these power structures look like? What national and international regulatory possibilities currently exist? What do the EU’s Digital Services Act, Digital Markets Act, and AI Act stipulate? What power do we, as users, actually have? Which alternative communication tools could we use—and why do we rarely do so? How did a few digital oligarchs manage to turn the utopia of a free global communication network, where all people could communicate equally and without censorship, into an incubator for online hate, racism, and anti-democratic forces? What would a utopian digital structure look like?

Our ideas of “authoritarianism,” “totalitarianism,” and “fascism” are shaped by the nightmare of overpowering, all-knowing state rule. Yet in the digital realm, we are faced with overpowering, all-knowing *private* corporations whose data dominance allows them to influence public opinion and elections—and thus to help create compliant governments. How has the relationship between states and the economy changed in the digital universe? With what terms can we describe this transfer of formerly sovereign powers into private hands? What is to be done?

*Participants with expertise in political science, internet policy, and media economics are especially welcome.*

The d*sign week 2025 revolves around the question: “For who(m) is the making?” – Who is involved in the design process, as a designer or as an addressee, and how does design connect the needs and everyday life of both? The week-long festival for experimental and independent design practices explores how access, participation, and inclusion can become guiding values for independent design work.The festival is organized by Potato Publishing and servus.at, together with the Departments of Visual Communication and Timebased Media at the University of Arts Linz. The partners bring extensive experience in independent and experimental projects, creating an open platform for exchange, learning, and creative collaboration. Through workshops, lectures, and conversations, the d*sign week opens spaces for exchange between designers, artists, and coders. The program is deliberately made accessible to a broader audience, including through note-taking, translation, and contextualization of content. The festival focuses on design as a social practice: Who benefits from design? How can it be made more inclusive? How can aesthetic and artistic intentions be balanced with accessibility? d*sign week 2025 invites participants to question design practices, develop new perspectives, and build networks of solidarity.

Wenn dein Computer nach 2010 hergestellt wurde, gibt es höchstwahrscheinlich keinen Grund, ihn wegzuwerfen. Mit einem aktuellen Linux-Betriebssystems kannst du ihn noch jahrelang weiterverwenden. Inspired by the cyclical and transformative nature of sourdough, servus.at is organizing a series of workshops with artists and collectives specializing in participatory, collaborative, and “regenerative” practices, in collaboration with Tomiris Dmitrievskikh.

The first event will feature Katharina Spanlang, member of the board of the Festival of Regions (https://fdr.at/). The workshop will explore the practice of the FdR as a cartography of practices of cooperation, community building, and the development of cultural infrastructures.

⊨ Community Boost durch das Re:ARDC

Unser Re:ARDC-Projekt (Digitale Transformation 2023–2024) wurde 2025 mit einigen Software Upgrades fortgesetzt.

Wir haben bewusst Dienste ausgewählt, die Kooperation, Austausch und Kommunikation zwischen Mitgliedern und Vereinen aus der servus.at community ermöglichen. Mit Clusters kann man beispielsweise per E-Mail, über den Browser oder die App mit der gesamten Community interagieren. Mit der Kulturkarte (basierend auf Gancio) können eigene Veranstaltungen, Workshops und Festivals geteilt werden. Wir haben Mattermost in Betrieb genommen für all jene, die einen selbst gehosteten Team-Chat für Kooperationen benötigen. Und letztlich Galaxy, eine selbst entwickelte Visualisierung der Servus-Community, in der die Themen, Interessen und Praktiken der Mitglieder dargestellt werden.

╚ Kulturkarte – Ein neuen Community Veranstaltungskalender! ╗

Die Kulturkarte entstand ebenfalls aus dem Projekt Re: ARDC und ist ein Online-Veranstaltungskalender für Events in Linz, Österreich und Europa (oder darüber hinaus), sowohl offline als auch online. Der Unterschied zu anderen Kalendern besteht darin, dass die Veranstaltungen in der Kulturkarte von Mitgliedern und Communities aus dem Umfeld der Netzkulturinitiative servus.at organisiert werden und sich um deren Interessen drehen.

Das Software worauf die Kulturkarte basiert ist heisst “Gancio” und ist sehr flexibel: man kann diverse Wege zum Import von Veranstaltungen verwenden, wie z.B. URLs, Kalender oder Website-Plugins (zB für Wordpress) die das Posten automatisieren. Kalender können auch unterschiedlich visualisiert/exportiert werden: in den persönlichen Kalender importiert, via RSS, Fediverse oder als “embeded” auf einer Webseite.

╚ Clusters – another online space to be! ╗

Clusters ist ein Communityforum, welches auch im Rahmen des Projekts Re:ARDC eingerichtet wurde.

Clusters ist die Plattform von servus.at, die Mitglieder vernetzt und den Austausch von Ideen, Feedback und Projekten fördert. Hier können Diskussionen zu verschiedenen Themen geführt, auf Veranstaltungen hingewiesen und Kunst sowie Forschung geteilt werden.

╚ Mattermost – self-hosted Team chat ╗

Mattermost ist eine Open-Source-Plattform zur Teamkommunikation und -Organisation, wobei eine eigene Mattermost-Instanz über unser Datacenter gehosted werden kann. Mattermost bietet Kanban-Style Boards, Foren, Channels und direkte Kommunikation mit Mitgliedern.
Matermost eignet sich besonder gut als Tool zur Organisation und Strukturierung von Veranstaltungen, Vereinen usw.

╚ Galaxy – visualisierung der menschen rund um servus.at ╗

Im Zuge des Re:ARDC Projekts haben wir unter unseren Mitgliedern eine Umfrage zur Nutzung unserer Tools, FLOSS im Allgemeinen, ihren Interessen sowie Tätigkeitsfeldern durchgeführt. Diese Ergegnisse bilden nun die Datengrundlage von galaxy.servus.at, eine von servus kreierte Website auf der wir unsere Mitglieder und ihre angegebenen Interessensgebiete visuell darstellen.

Mit Galaxy soll veranschaulicht werden, mit welcher Vielzahl an Themen sich unsere Mitglieder beschäftigen und wie divers eine lebendige Community sein kann. Darüber hinaus sollen aber auch Verknüpfungen und Überschneidungen sichtbar gemacht werden, die den Beteiligten vielleicht selber nicht bekannt waren und idealerweise sogar zu neuen Kooperationen anregen kann.

⊨Community boost through Re:ARDC

Our Re:ARDC project (Digital Transformation, 2023–2024) continued into 2025 with special software updates. We have installed a few services that support cooperation, exchange and communication between members and associations within the Servus community. With Clusters, for instance, you can communicate with the entire community via email, browser, or app. The Culture Map (based on Gancio) allows you to share your own events, workshops and festivals. We launched Mattermost for anyone needing a self-hosted team chat for collaboration. Finally, there is Galaxy, an in-house developed visualisation of the Servus community, where you can see members' topics, interests, and practices.

╚ Kulturkarte: a community calendar for cultural events! ╗

Kulturkarte also originated within the Re: ARDC project, and is an online event calendar covering events in Linz, Austria, Europe and beyond, as well as online events. Unlike other centralised calendars, the events on Kulturkarte are organised by members and communities around the net culture initiative servus.at and revolve around their interests. The software on which Kulturkarte is based is called 'Gancio' and is highly flexible. Various input methods are available, including URLs, calendars and website plugins (e.g. for WordPress), which automate posting. Calendars can also be visualised or exported in various ways, such as being imported into your personal calendar, as an RSS feed, on the Fediverse or as an “embed” on a website.

╚ Mattermost is a self-hosted team chat platform ╗

Mattermost is an open-source team communication and organisation platform, and you can host your own Mattermost instance via our data centre. Mattermost offers Kanban-style boards, forums, channels and direct communication with members. Mattermost is particularly well suited to organising and structuring events, clubs, etc.

╚ Galaxy – visualisation of the people within and around servus.at ╗

As part of the Re:ARDC project, we surveyed our members about their use of our tools and FLOSS in general, as well as their interests and fields of activity. The results of this survey now form the basis of the data for galaxy.servus.at, a website created by Servus which visually represents our members and their stated areas of interest.

Galaxy illustrates the wide range of topics our members are involved in, showing how diverse a vibrant community can be. Additionally, it aims to highlight connections and overlaps that may not have been apparent to those involved, and ideally may even inspire new collaborations.

Lucile Olympe Haute & David Benqué – Institute of Diagram Studies, Federico Poni, Ioana Vreme Moser, Pedro del Real, REINCANTAMENTO, Ginevra Petrozzi, Staš Vrenko, S()fia Braga, and Technologie and das Unheimliche. Furthermore, the festival presents other exhibitions and cooperations that explore specific topics: an exhibition on AI and data surveillance by the Tactical Tech collective; the Slovenian new media bonfire project KRES. Kindling Sparks of Slovene Digital Art; an international edition of the Student Award Exhibition; and the IN FOCUS exhibition featuring the Austrian collective Stadtwerkstatt, which is developing new media contexts and autonomous info- and infra-structures since 1979.

As simple as it is. We started the long journey to AMRO by deciding when it will happen: from 13^th to 16^th May 2026. Save the date and stay tuned: this time we aim at publishing our Call for Project earlier than usual.

⊨ Funding uncertainties from Austrian Ministry for Culture.
Consider becoming servus member!

If you follow the servus.at main newsletter, you will probably already know this. The ministry (BWKKMS) has cut our 2025 annual program funding by 30%. Yes, the city of Linz gave us a long awaited funding rise (thanks!), however for how the funding distributed in our activities, it is the ministry that mostly support and influence AMRO.

We will have an appointment soon with the fund managers of the ministry to discuss the reasons for the budget cut and our future prospects. The outlook for 2026 however is generally not great, as everyone is talking about saving money and reducing resources (which, by the way, looks like the perfect ground for AI corporations to inject the system and ensure easy money in the future).

Our intention is to continue organize our Art Meets Radical Openness community festival, perhaps in a more compressed and focused form. We are actively looking for other forms of funding, hopefully there are news soon. However, if you have the capacity and the resources to support AMRO and servus, consider becoming a servus.at member. Membership not only provides access to our community and infrastructure, but also helps to make our operation less dependent on fluctuating political will. https://core.servus.at/en/member

Auch 2025 kooperiert servus.at mit dem MFRU, dem International Festival of Computer Arts in Maribor. Ende September eröffnet die neue Ausgabe mit dem Titel „Esoteric Ecotechnics. Irrational Computation and Conspiratorial Networking”, die von Lara Mejac und Davide Bevilacqua kuratiert wird.
Derzeit läuft eine Ausschreibung für studentische Projekte, die sich mit minimalistischen, sozialen und ökologischen Formen der Berechnung im Kontext von Magie, Volkstraditionen, Ritualen und Prinzipien des Irrationalen beschäftigen. Von Cyberwitchcraft bis zum rural Computing.

⊨ Research Lab 2025: Fluidic Cookbook

Under the title Fluidic Cookbook, the Research Lab 2025 kicks off this month with an exploration of fluidic systems, a research initiated and developed by artist Ioana Vreme Moser, and accompanied by curator Diane Pricop. The artistic research investigates an alternative, obsolete technology named fluidics that was developed in parallel with electronics for computation and was later abandoned because it couldn’t operate as fast as its mineral counterpart. The inquiry opens as an imaginative and speculative exercise in which computers become fluid.

The residency will be accompanied by two public events:
